You Are To Be Perfect

When I was in my early teens, I read a Bible verse that said, “you are to be perfect.” (Matthew 5:48).

Unfortunately, I did not understand the context or the true meaning of this verse, which is we are to be moving toward perfection – being better people – as we grow older and more experienced. In my teenage brain, I took it to mean that I was to be perfect immediately, and always. Of course, we all know that is an impossible standard for us imperfect humans.

What does this have to do with your financial life? I think that as humans, we tend to be paralyzed into non-action if we do not know the perfect solution with our investments.

What would be the perfect investment? Well, I would think it would be an investment that would go up a lot every year, and never experience any negative returns. (By the way, if you ever see that, you need to run, because it is a scam!)

In reality, investing should be moving toward our goals but it is not a perfect journey. Just as we are to move toward being kinder, less selfish people, perfect investing really should be what gets us to retirement and other goals without fear of failure. Just like our human emotions, the journey will be rocky as we move toward investment “perfection,” but the journey is what makes the “perfection” of our goals possible. I would encourage you not to be paralyzed by the lack of having THE perfect investment, but instead to move forward and make progress using a well thought out plan.
